Feature Requests

Post by ThirdManZither »

I hesitate to make any requests at all since the team did such great work on this; however, I have a few modest requests:

1) Incorporate oscillator drift. It's an important part of the Chroma sound, and the amount should be user-selectable.

2) Option to use original parameter ranges/values rather than the updated 0-100. This would have limited value and should be a selectable option only since the new scheme is much more practical, but it would be useful when working with old patches.

3) Option to enable the thumper sound

+1 on the first two; I don't know what the third one is. The ability to feed in values that you've got written down from a real unit I consider a must, even if it requires an extra dialog. Be it noted that I don't have access to a real Chroma, but I do have two MemoryMoogs, and you did supply the capability (and the drift controls) on your MemoryMode, and I very much appreciate that.

The "thumper" or "tapper" was a solenoid mounted behind the front panel of the Chroma. When the data entry slider moved from one parameter value to the next, it would cause the "thumper" to knock against the panel, giving you audio and tactile feedback that you had 'clicked' into the next value. Particuarly useful for parameters which have a limited range of possible values, as it made the data entry slider feel and sound like a slide switch.

Early review with a photo of the "tapper" in Electronics & Music Maker magazine.

The tapper was a novel way to bring haptic feedback to the membrane switches and sliders, it was useful playing live so the player could feel that a change was made. It was also useful in sound design. It was a quirky little detail that many Chroma users, including myself, were fond of.

A sample of the tapper sound which could be enabled and disabled would be a fun addition to toe Cherry Chroma.
